Reflection from a Human Rights Protection Workshop, held in Vidin (April, 2019)

On April 15-16, NGO Organization Drom launched a workshop in Vidin in partnership with the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee on “Capacity building of civil organizations in using the mechanisms of protection against discrimination”. The workshop was hosted by the Information Center of the Vidin District and it involved about 20 participants from all over North West Bulgaria – health mediators from Vratza, Montana and Vidin, lawyers from Vidin, mayors of cities in the region and citizens. Ms. Donka Panayotova welcomed the audience. Ms. Adela Kachaunova (lawyer), and Mr. Radoslav Stoyanov (media expert), who collaborate with the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, served as lecturers. Ms. Mariyana Borisova (lawyer) and Ms. Tatyana Zhilova, Sofia Administrative Court, also took part as lecturers. The workshop topics involved areas, like legal instruments for protection from discrimination, forms of discrimination, functioning of the Commission for Protection from Discrimination, as well as topics related to court proceedings were also discussed. The lecturers touched upon many practical cases, which were useful for the audience. The workshop contributed substantially with knowledge and experience, which improved local capacity of institutions and individuals in North West Bulgaria.

The project, entitled “Roma Empowerment for Anti-discrimination and Integration: Regional capacity-building in equality mechanisms and promotion of good practices in Roma Integration” is financed by the European Commission.
