Quality education for the Roma children from Vidin region 2014/2015


Major objectives

  • Provide access to quality education for Roma children in the poorest region of Bulgaria;
  • Involve Roma parents in school life;
  • Raise awareness among key stakeholders (teachers, Regional Educational Inspectorate, etc.) about integrated and quality education for Roma children;
  • Maintain best practice Vidin desegregation model (integrating Roma children in the mainstream schools and improving their learning opportunities).


Project goals

  1. Decrease the number of Roma students dropping out of school;
  2. Increase daily presence of Roma children at the mainstream school;
  3. Increase performance and successful national testing (matura) exams of Roma children in 4th, 7th, and 12th grade in Bulgarian language, Mathematics, and another subject;
  4. Improve written and oral skills of Bulgarian language;
  5. Increase motivation of Roma children to graduate from high school and get interested in higher education;
  6. Work with teachers to help motivate Roma parents to support their children’s education; 
  7. Help create integrated and tolerant school environment via tutorials and extracurricular activities that involve Roma and non-Roma students.


The project is financed by the Trust for Social Achievement 

The Trust for Social Achievement (TSA) is a nonprofit organization, whose mission is to break the poverty cycle by promoting opportunities that help Bulgaria’s most disadvantaged citizens achieve educational and economic success. TSA supports programs that, with integrity, scalability, and transparency, boost the long-term achievement of Bulgaria’s poorest, with a focus on the Roma.
